225 youth bowlers will be awarded $50,000 in scholarships this year for their outstanding performance in the CA Pepsi Championships!  These winners are the most deserving as they have survived through two rounds of qualifying for the 11-Under Division and three rounds of qualifying for the 12-Up Division.  League-level qualifying was held in November and January and the District Finals were held this past March at eight different locations over two different weekends: District #1 – AMF Orchard Lanes, Chico; District #2 – Manteca Bowl, Manteca; District #3 – Delta Bowl, Antioch; District #4 – Black Oak Lanes, North Tuolumne; District #5 – Canoga Park Bowl, Winnetka; District #6 – Yucca Bowl, Yucca Valley; District #7 – Chaparral Lanes, San Dimas; and District #8 – Vista Entertainment Center, Vista. A total of 1,210 bowlers participated in the 11-Under Division and 1,955 participated in the 12-Up Divisions (3,165 total). Thank you to the 2010 hosting centers!

The State Finals were held at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley on May 1-2. We had 366 bowlers travel from across the state to attend.  California will be sending four bowlers from the Scratch Division: Steven Manier, Mark Myers, Dara Ajimine and Madison Kircher to the 2010 USBC Jr. Gold Finals to be held in Indianapolis, IN this July. They will also receive a travel stipend along with their state scholarship. For the Stepladder Roll-off in the Boys Scratch Division, Mark Myers from Yorba Linda Bowl was top qualifier with a 6-game set of 1,464 (231-275-258-247-249-203). Steven Manier from Surf Bowl was a close second with 1,433 (247-257-257-237-209-226). Rounding out the final top four for the stepladder roll-off was Max Slevcove from Yorba Linda Bowl (232-214-246-179-268-288 = 1,427) and Brandon Pekins from Gardena Bowl (169-229-237-246-259-259 = 1,396). In the Girls Scratch Division, Brandie Woodward from AMF Hemet led the field with 1,332 (227-257-257-194-190-207). Qualifying second was Dara Ajimine from Gardena Bowl shooting 1219 (159-226-214-203-193-224). Finishing the field was Madison Kircher from Fireside Lanes (153-246-147-224-205-236 = 1211) and Lauren Orgeron from AMF Visalia (210-194-156-279-171-162 = 1172).

Since USBC discontinued the Pepsi National Finals in 2008, we came up with something new this year and California will be sending the top four handicap division finalists: Mark Lecount, Patrick Benito, Olivia Deharo and Manika Squadrille to the California Youth State Championships to be held this July in Vista/Oceanside.  For the top four stepladder qualifiers in the Boys Handicap division, Mark Lecount from Chaparral Lanes (TurtleBowl) led the field followed by Patrick Benito from Brunswick Moreno Valley Bowl. The third place qualifier was Austin Corrick from Yucca Bowl and fourth was Jeremiah Ofiana from Gilroy Lanes. In the Girls Handicap Division, Olivia Deharo from AMF Mission was top qualifier, followed by Catie Noska from Brunswick West Covina Lanes. Third qualifier was Manika Squadrille and last to make the cut was Kianna Hersey from Boardwalk Bowl.

We are extremely thankful for our many sponsors this year. For the 10th year in a row, and provided bowling bags for each of our district and state raffles. We also received bowling balls from NorthStar Pro Shop (located inside AMF Orchard Lanes), Pacific Coast Pro Shop (located inside Canoga Park Bowl), Bowlers Corner Pro Shop (located inside Chaparral Lanes), Bowler’s Advantage Pro Shop (located inside Vista Entertainment Center), Lane 37 Pro Shop (located inside Delta Bowl) and Pin Point Bowling Concepts (located inside AMF Beverly Bowl). Digital Team Photography also donated a portion of the State Finals photo sales directly to the scholarship fund.  Their support is a direct result of how we can raise so much money in this great event. Please help us to thank them by patronizing their businesses.

Thanks to all of the District Directors: Robyn Hricik, Shirley Lyons, Tim Pato, June Brown, Tom Leigh, Don Lauer, Annette Anderson and Linda Stewart for their hard work in running the District Finals this year and to all of those that helped them. We know that it takes more than two directors to run these events and they all did a superb job. Also thanks to the District Finals hosting centers and to Fountain Bowl for their great hospitality!

District Directors will be contacting past Pepsi participating centers in regards to hosting this event for 2011. We need to have centers in place by July, so if you are interested, please contact your respective District Director for more information.  All scholarship award recipients were mailed a scholarship packet with a commemorative certificate. All funds are held with SMART so be sure to contact them immediately if you do not receive acknowledgment of your award.  Thanks again to all of those that supported this event this year.

These sponsors have donated items for our fundraising raffle at the District and State finals sites to help us raise more scholarship dollars. Please support these sponsors and help us THANK them for their generous contributions!

Thank you for your support and participation in one of the largest scholarship events in California. Last year we worked extremely hard with your help in raising funds so that we could award $70,000 in scholarships! With the rising cost of education, this tournament strongly benefits many young bowlers on their way to a promising future.
