Proprietor of the Year Recipients

RON BRISENO SELECTED AS 2017
PROPRIETOR OF THE YEAR

The award for Proprietor/General Manager of the year goes to Ron Briseno from Vista. He is the General Manager of Vista Entertainment Center which is a 40 lane center. The center has 19 certified leagues and 2 certified youth leagues. His center hosts parties, adult house tournaments at least monthly, and many fun events for it bowlers. He coordinates adult/youth events and fundraisers. He offers special pricing for his youth bowlers and he has half of his center covered in bulletin boards to post local adult and youth tournaments and results. He also hosts many local and State events. Congratulations on a job well done!

PODDIG SELECTED AS 2014
PROPRIETOR OF THE YEAR

By Phyl Knoll

It is our task to recognize those bowling center proprietors who are extra special.  One who is doing everything possible to keep the occasional recreational bowler “coming back”; who is outstanding in the promotion of our Adult and Youth bowling; one who does many great things in the service to their Adult and Youth Leagues; and one who sets an example in the field of leadership in our sport by being a member of the local, state and national bowling associations.

Mr. Scott Poddig is the California USBC’s nominee for our 2014 Proprietor of the Year Award and certainly fits all of the award profile expectations.  He will be honored at the CUSBC Convention June 7-8, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn) in Sacramento. Poddig is not a stranger by any means in our California bowling arena, as for over ten years he was a partner and General Manager in the operation of Harley’s Camarillo Bowl in Camarillo. By his side at the center was his wife Teresa as well as his bowling partner,  along with their children Jordan 17, John 26, Jaime 27 and even their 2 Yr old ”I Love To Bowl”  Grandson Atticus.

While at HCB, Poddig constantly hosted activities to draw the adult and youth bowlers into the center and was even a consultant to ESPN (in-center qualifying) finals of the $250,000 Bowling Shootout.  However, It was always Poddig’s passion to run “his own” center. That opportunity came to fruition on July 16, 2012 when he and his wife Teresa acquired ownership of the beautiful Bowlium Lanes in Montclair. Poddig didn’t waste any time putting the youth program at the top of his list.  He pays the USBC certification fees for all youths in their program; sponsors youths in tournaments (when parents can’t afford to pay); has hosted the JAT (Junior Amateur Tour); JBT (Junior Bowlers Tour); Collegiate Montclair Open & Collegiate Bowlium Open.  And, he has hosted the CUSBC Women’s Championship Tournament; CUSBC Helen Duval Veterans Tournament; West Coast Senior Tournament; and Billy Myers Sr Annual PBA Regional Tournament.   Besides being a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and a loyal supporter to numerous local, state and national events, Poddig visits the local schools to promote Youth Bowling... and the list goes on and on and on.

STEVE DAVIS CHOSEN
2013 PROPRIETOR OF THE YEAR

By Phyl Knoll

The California USBC Association Awards Committee has announced the Honoree of the 2013 Proprietor of the Year Award.

Steve Davis, Age 56, has been Partner and Manager of ZoDo’s – Bowling and Beyond in Goleta, California since 2004 after serving as an employe of ZoDo’s for three years. He brought with him experience in the business world, having worked as a Pro Shop Operator for three years and even owning and operating an Italia Pizzeria for 16 years.  He knew how to service the customer.  Steve has been married to wife Terri 32 years. They have three children Madison 21, Taylor 28, and Crystal 29.  Terri serves as his Partner and Assistant Manager of ZoDo’s.

Davis currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Bowling Centers of Southern California (BCSC);  has been a member of  several local California Association Boards and when called upon, worked many local association tournaments.  He is a certified coach in Youth Baseball, Basketball, Soccer; and has assisted in many assorted youth activities, not failing to mention the school “Snack Stands”.

Davis began his bowling career at age eight and loved the game.  He continues to  “love the game firmly believing that it’s a great way to socialize and exercise.  He strives to be a part of continuing the success and development of bowling across the nation.  One of his goals is bringing a fresh look and an open mind to the customers.  He strongly feels that the industry needs to continue to explore youth & young adult options in order to build bowlers for life. He does his part by spending many of his Saturdays coaching the youth and young adult bowlers.  According to Davis “people need to understand that ZoDo’s represents the entire bowling business, not just our own center.  And, what works in one center doesn’t work in others.  Sometimes we have good ideas that don’t wor. But on the other hand, we had some ideas we thought would never work, but in the long run…did!    You never know until you try!  We continually push to offer great values (not just monetarily) to our bowlers for the betterment and future success of bowling”.

CONGRATULATIONS to Steve Davis, who has truly proven himself as a successful businessperson and a promoter of bowling, earning the respect of not only the bowling industry but that of his local communities.

2012 PROPRIETOR OF THE YEAR
Charles Kinstler

Charlie was born into a bowling family and started bowling at age 6. At age 10, he would keep score for his parents — Charlie Sr. and Shirley. He liked the way numbers added up as well as his bank account! After graduation from USC in the early 1980’s, it was time to get a real job.

A chance conversation revealed that Del Rio Lanes in Downey was available. So in 1984, Charlie purchased the center and became the proprietor of 32 lanes. Automatic scoring was just becoming reliable — and since Charlie loves tech-no innovations, Del Rio leaped into the electronic age. Soon to follow was a complete renovation from roof to synthetic lanes.  The bowlers loved it — the senior scorekeepers retired, and Downey had a new bowling home, meeting place and “Tax Payer”! He loved the challenge.

In 1994, Keystone Lanes in nearly Norwalk was sinking fast.  Charlie rescued the 48 lane center and once again dragged a dying center back to life.  2004 was the year AMF decided to close Forest Lanes. A midnight agreement added another link to a growing chain.  Do you see a pattern here? 1984, 1994 and 2004?

Only 4 years passed before he made the next “REALLY BIG” decision. Cal Bowl in Lakewood and Bowlium in Montclair were both purchased. Both needed complete over-hauls! In all cases, the employees kept their jobs, and the bowlers received a safe, clean, honest, bowling home to be proud of.

Charlie bowled his weekly leagues, and contributed his time to the industry, such as President of the Southern California Bowling Writers and Hall of Fame. He also served as President of the Southern California Bowling Proprietors. During his term, he negotiated a discount program with Pepsi for all members of the National Proprietors Association saving them thousands of dollars.

The most recent purchase for Charlie was Saddleback Lanes in Mission Viejo. He always liked that property and was finally able to make that happen in 2011.

Charlie’s centers have hosted many local and state functions. In fact, Cal Bowl and Keystone Lanes are hosting the 2012 Open Championships and Forest Lanes and Saddleback Lanes are hosting the 2012 Youth State Championships.

One of Charlie’s favorite annual events is the “Clipper’s Charity Fundraiser”.  “You know, those BIG GUYS that play that OTHER ball game!” This year, the novice young desk girl looked WAY UP, to greet a 7-foot forward, and was speechless when he asked for a size 22 rental shoe and a 40 pound ball!
