MEET OUR DIRECTORS

DIRECTOR BIO

Andre Eubanks

President & CYC Co-Chair

Began bowling at the age of 2 and have been at it constantly ever since.  Bowling has always been an integral part of my identity and I strive to improve the state of the sport in all aspects.  I have bowled over 30 perfect games, with a high series of 834.  I began my involvement in the service side of bowling at the age of 15, assisting the youth director with coaching and other administrative tasks.  I then went on to serve on the local YABA board, and was elected Sgt-At-Arms for several terms.  I also served one term as Treasurer for the California Youth Leaders Association. In 2003, I took a hiatus from service to focus on my educational and bowling aspirations, during which time I attained a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and became a member of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA).  Now that my professional and bowling careers are stable I am glad to say that my hiatus is officially over.  I am the past District 7 Director for the CYC and am now the Co-Chair of the CYC and President on the main board. I am also the President of the Greater LA County USBC as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the CUSBC.  I owe many of my successes to youth bowling, as the skills and experiences attained prepared me for higher level competition.  Additionally, the scholarship dollars earned funded a great deal of my education, so I am forever indebted to this sport.

Cindy Akin

Director

I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University and a Master’s degree from USC. Youth are important to me as evidenced by years of service at a local school board followed by eight years working as a policy consultant for the California School Boards Association, which allowed me to use my expertise to assist school boards across the state. I also own and operate Gold Hill Stables, a horse boarding facility that has been in operation for over 30 years.

I am an avid bowler and consider it not only a hobby, but a true passion.  As the Association Manager of the Sierra Gold USBC, I am able to effectively combine a love of the sport with skills in management and leadership.  I’ve continued my own education in the sport by attending both State and National USBC Conventions. My husband and I also run/assist with over a dozen annual tournaments in Northern California and Nevada with the SIR organization. Whether participating in leagues or simply enjoying a casual game with friends, bowling is an important part of my life.

I have been bowling for 50+ years and was league secretary for 3 leagues for both winter and summer leagues for several years.  I was asked to join the San Diego Women’s Association board in 1990 and served on the board thru the merger in 2006.  Was elected President of the San Diego USBC in 2009 – 2012 and still serve on the board as a Director.  Joined the CUSBC Board as a Director after attending several State conventions.  Have served on committees for Hall of Fame, CUSBC convention awards dinner, BVL, CUSBC State Seniors Tournament.   Attended National and State Conventions for both WIBC, ABC and CUSBC.

I am Secretary for the Greater San Diego Bowling Council (GSDBC) which consists of bowling proprietors, several bowling clubs, and association members. We promote bowling and support BVL thru our local and State associations.

Debbie Elliott

I have been bowling for over 40 years and had to stop for health reasons.  I miss throwing the ball but now have learned to enjoy the sport by watching my husband and friends bowl.  I have been a league secretary and league president for many different leagues.  I was asked to join the San Jose Women’s Association board in 1980s and served on the board thru the merger.   I served on and chaired many committees as a Director on the local boards.  I was elected as President of the merged board, Santa Clara County USBC, in 2020 after serving as Vice President and Sgt of Arms.

I have recently joined the CUSBC Board as a Director in 2023 and I am looking forward to serving the board and its members.  Currently serving on the Awards, BVL and Tournament committees.

Steve Johnson

Director

Compliments to my mother, a WIBC bowler, who started me in bowling at age 5. I  accompanied her to league and tournament bowing and learned to keep score with that old yellow grease pencil. While I was involved in all sports growing up, at some point I stopped growing and was no longer able to compete at the level I wanted to in some sports. But Bowling… I can compete with anyone on the lanes. And while winning the Doubles event of the 2019 California USBC Adult Championship is certainly nice, at this point, I really find the friendships I’ve made as a result of bowling bring me more satisfaction. Friendships that have lasted decades and friends I consider family. I have bowled in A LOT of centers and A LOT of leagues and have held all positions at the league level. I started coaching Youth leagues in 1988. I am currently the 2nd VP of the North County USBC as well as a Director with the CUSBC.

Brett Kociemba

I began bowling at the age of four at the local bowling center, Orchard Lanes in Chico, CA.  My grandparents both worked at Orchard Lanes and were very supportive of my love of bowling and my bowling career. I started bowling on Saturday Mornings in league and that is where I met my wife of 38 years. I enjoyed bowling in travel league, and I would travel to tournaments like the Nor Cal Youth Bowling Association and American Junior Bowling Congress.

My love of bowling did not stop there, I attended my first coaching clinic when I was 17 and was Level One trained. When coaching training transitioned to Bronze Level, I completed that training also.  I have been the local Youth Director for the past 10 years, with one youth league and a youth/adult league.

I joined the local USBC board in 1996 and have served for the last 27 years as Director, Second VP, First VP and I was recently elected to serve as President which will add to my 8 previous years in that role.  I currently bowl in two leagues, averaging around 210, before a shoulder injury sidelined me for a bit.  I have had nine 300 games and two 795 series in my career.

I was appointed to the CA Youth Committee in 2019 and am responsible for running the Pepsi tournament for District 1. In 2023, I was elected to the CUSBC board as a Director and look forward to many more years of service to the sport I love.  My goal is to provide the youth and adults in my community all the opportunities to pursue a lifetime of bowling whether it is recreational or competitive.

I recently took over the position of Association Manager for the Southern LA County USBC in September 2018 and took over the Association Manager position for the CUSBC in August 2021. I’ve had a great experience in youth and collegiate bowling and enjoy giving back to the youth of today!

Tanya Nelson

I grew up in a bowling center because my mom is a bowler and I began bowling myself at age 6.  I bowled throughout my youth and even collegiately as a club sport at Cal Berkeley.  I’ve also been involved with the volunteer side of the sport since childhood.  I served on both the local and state YABA boards in Washington and was a Youth Ambassador of the year.  Once I finished college, I moved to Cupertino, CA, where I was asked to join the San Jose WBA as a Director.  As a Director, I learned much about the sport of bowling from the administrative side and chaired many committees.

After 2006, I continued to serve as a Director on the merged board, Santa Clara County USBC.  While serving on the SCC USBC, I’ve had many roles including Director, Tournament Chair, Vice President, and President.  I continue to volunteer on the SCC USBC wherever I am needed – currently I am serving as the Youth Committee Chairperson.  I am now looking forward to bringing my knowledge and passion to the CUSBC board as a newly elected director and I can’t wait to start making a difference!

Don Way

Director

I have an Associate Degree in Automotive Technology and work in the automotive industry for 42 years.  I retired when Covid closed almost everything down.  I was asked to be the Association Manager for the San Diego USBC at that time.  I took the position as I love the sport of bowling and wanted to continue working with the bowlers of San Diego.  I became involved in the association side of bowling when my son and daughter began bowling.  I joined the YABA just before the merger and after the merger was asked to join the San Diego USBC as a director in 2007.  I have held every position, director, vice president and president and have been on all the committees.  I am a Bronze level coach and I presently am the Youth Director at Mira Mesa Lanes in San Diego.  I also work at Mira Mesa Lanes doing the average service and l am the league coordinator.

I have been a bowler since 1975, when my parents asked me to bowl with them in their league.  I laid off bowling in 1990 when the center we bowled at closed and was not asked to go anywhere else.  I started again in 1995 when I was asked to bowl on a work no tap league and have continued ever since.  I have held offices of secretary and president in many of the leagues that I have participated in.  I have a lifetime average of 205 and have bowled six 300 games in my career.  I do not plan on stopping any time soon as I bowl in five leagues in the winter and three in the summer.

I was elected to the California USBC in 2023 as a director.  I had been attending the conventions since I was elected on the San Diego USBC board.  I was asked to be on the nominating committee in 2019 and served on that committee until elected to the state board.  I ran for the state board because Lynn Matsubara need help with the running of the tournaments and I have a lot of experience running tournaments.  I hope to help the board continue the great work that they have started and continue to develop.
