This year our Convention and annual meeting was modified to a one day event trying to keep costs down for the local associations in sending their delegates.

The USBC Jamboree was held in the morning. Jarrod Gallegos from USBC talked through his presentations with updates regarding lane certifications, BVL donations (California USBC was second highest in donations for 2023-24 with $95,119.45) and the new option starting August 1st of being able to purchase multiple memberships online at BOWL.com.

We provided a luncheon for all of the delegates. Despites a late start with the food setup, we were finally able to start the event with our presentation of the 2025 California Youth State $1,000 Scholarship to Shin Gabriel Sangalang from Dublin. Shin didn’t know that we were turning the presentation into a press conference. The guests were able to ask him different questions about his bowling history, equipment and plans for the future.  It was quite fun. (The other youth scholarship winners are from Southern California and were not able to attend the luncheon).

In the afternoon, we held our annual meeting.  The meeting was our annual updates on our event and tournaments.  Most reports are posted above. There were no by-law changes so the only legislation was our elections of three incumbant Directors: Don Way, Brett Kociemba and Linda Stewart.  All were approved by acclamation. Lynn Matsubara and Tom Leigh were also approved to be Delegates for the 2026 USBC Convention in Reno.

Our awards dinner was held later that evening.  We honored five Hall of Fame inductees, three for Superior Performance (Regina Aboud, Bonnie Garber and Ray Valdovino) and two for Professional Performance (Wayne Garber and Larry Laub). It was a very festive group as all of the inductees (excluding Larry Laub who was not able to attend) were old friends who bowled together. It was a nice reunion for them. We will have a video soon that will be posted on youtube.com.

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

STAR OF TOMORROW $2,500 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Jai Kankariya – Diamond Bar, CA
Aaron Calica – Panorama, CA

CALIFORNIA STATE YOUTH $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Lindsay Greim – Poway, CA
Shin Sangalang – Dublin, CA

The Hall of Fame dinner was a lively group as all of the inductees are friends and have bowled together for many, many years! We will have a video soon to publish for everyone to enjoy.  The stories were amazing and the raffle winners were the highlight of the night!

ONE DAY EVENT in San Jose

Convention weekend was busy.  An association forum was held where a few topics were brought up.  The first discussion was for Association Managers and others to understand what is the correct book average that should be uploaded into BOWL.com. The answer is league ending averages only! NOT January 1, April 15 or May 31. Also, summer leagues must end by October 1. This means that summer averages must be posted on BOWL.com and the league will re-certify (on the back end) with the new season. League sheets can continue as normal. When that winter league ends, the summer pinfall must be extracted out so that only the new winter league average will be posted. SEE HANDOUT

We also discussed why we are modifying the California State Championships to be team and singles event only. There are many reasons that led us to this decision. See attached Why no doubles flyer.

Jarrod Gallegos from USBC came out to run the Jamboree section of the weekend. He updated us on the current status of USBC. One new items that will start August 1, 2024 is that local cards can be purchased on BOWL.com. That is exciting and very useful for those that bowl tournaments and sub in different associations.

Our awards dinner was held Saturday evening.  We honored six Hall of Fame inductees and three youth scholarships winners. It was star studded affair as were finally able to induct two California icons, Glenn Allison and Donna Adamek. They are the second group to join our new Professional Performance category. Last year, we inducted Barry Asher and Mike McGrath.

Our other honorees in the Superior Performance category were Ty Dawson, Pam Pancoast and Bob Warning. There was so much history and admiration in the room, it was a tremendous evening. We did have a videographer there so we will be posting the dinner speeches very soon. The stories were all great. Our Meritorious Service honoree, Dave Williams was unable to attend.  He is anxiously awaiting for the video.

We also honored our youth with three scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. Congratulations to Stephanie Hong and Ryland Pimentel for winning the $2,500 Star of Tomorrow Award. Arden Han-Wei and Ashley Soto won the $1,000 CA Youth State Scholarship and Ashley also won the $1,000 Braheme Family Memorial Scholarship that we manage for the family of George & Ola Braheme. Each Hall of Fame inductee is posted on facebook with their bios. CONGRATULATIONS to the California USBC class of 2024!
