GOLDEN EMPIRE USBC/BAKERSFIELD HOSTS 2009 BVL STATE CLASSIC TOURNAMENT
By: Bette Addington
Once every so many years Bakersfield is lucky enough to get to host the CUSBC State BVL (Bowlers to Veterans Link) Classic tournament. It hasn’t been since 2001 at AMF Westchester but Bakersfield got to host this year again and Regency Bowling Center was the location. The event took place on Saturday, April 4. There were three squads and over 140 bowlers came from all over the state to try to win their division. The event’s divisions include juniors as well as adult bowlers who bowl in divisions based on their book averages which makes this tournament unique.
The festivities were kicked off patriotically with Opening Ceremonies that included the Honor Guard from the Bakersfield High School ROTC, followed by a salute to our American Flag, our National Anthem and a speech from a couple representatives from CA Veterans Affairs. One of the gentlemen was Robert Simonet, Jr. and he represented the VA Hospital from Sepulveda and was a recent Veteran himself and explained how much BVL is appreciated by Veterans throughout our state. There was also a representative there from the VA Outreach Center in Bakersfield. Also present were CUSBC BVL Committee members including Rosie Parker and Linda Johnson as well as GEUSBC BVL Chair Midge Denning.
Then the bowling competition began and went on all day long with full squads. The 2009 BVL Division Winners were:

BVL was started in 1942 and is the way bowlers can show veterans they will never forget their service.
