2021 ADULT CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE 2021 CA PEPSI YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE SET, BUT WILL THEY TAKE PLACE?

The 2020 CA Pepsi Youth Championships were cancelled on March 11, 2020. The District Finals was originally scheduled for March 14-15 and March 21-22 at eight different centers. All of the qualifiers were set and we were ready to go. It was a heart breaking decision to cancel, but it was the right decision. The youth most affected were the 18 year olds that were going to ‘age out’ this year due to the lowering of the maximum age restriction going into affect for the 2020-21 season. We emailed Chad Murphy at USBC asking for a postponement on that change due to this unforeseen shutdown of the world. It was denied. Those youth that were looking for college recruitments would have to be creative in figuring out how to get noticed. Our Pepsi Championships that pays out $50,000 in scholarship annually would not be an accomplishment for their resumes, unfortunately. If California bowling centers are not open by February 1, 2021, this event will be cancelled due to the COVID-19 mandated shutdown.
CUSBC ANNOUNCEMENT
The California USBC Association Board of Directors met on 9/29/20 and have made the following decisions:
- The 2021 Adult State Championships to be held at Forest Lanes has been cancelled due to the unknown future of the centers re-opening and the unknown capacity that the centers can hold once they do re-open.
- The 2021 Pepsi Youth Championships will be District (March) and State Finals (May) only. League level qualifying is removed. Only current California youth that are entered in a 2020-21 USBC certified league can participate. Youth Directors will be emailed a tournament packet by November 1st and hard copy packets by December. If centers are still closed by February 1, this event will unfortunately have to cancel.
- All other CUSBC events will be addressed next year.

STEVE MATHEWS
Steve Mathews who is also from El Cajon, has been bowling since he was 4 years old and still loves the game. He worked his way up through the Youth Organizations and went adult when he turned 17. His bowling accomplishments are many! He has 38-300 games and 33-800 series. He has a first place in the Cal State Open Championships in Team event (2014) and was inducted into the San Diego USBC Hall Of Fame in 2018 for Superior Performance. Side note: Steve’s father Lou was also inducted into the CUSBC Hall of Fame for Superior Performance in 2017.

RULE CHANGES Rule 400 – Youth Membership Eligibility
Reduces the age limit for youth membership to 18 from 20.
New Rule
USBC Youth membership is available to an individual who has not reached their 18th birthday prior to August 1 of the current bowling season. BALL SPECIFICATIONS – EFFECTIVE 8/1/20
- A bowling ball’s oil absorption rate must be more than 2 minutes, 15 seconds for the ball to be approved
- Elimination of balance holes; bowlers may have up to five holes for gripping purposes and all must be used on every delivery
- No-thumb bowlers would need to mark by scribe, engraver or tool near the intended center of palm with a plus (+) mark

FRANK WEILER
Frank Weiler lives in San Bernardino and has been involved in bowling for over 65 years and is still very involved in reporting on the many bowling events he attends. Frank has promoted the sport of bowling as a writer and photographer for over 20 years. He has done so in an outstanding manner winning 7 writing awards – 5 National and 2 California State awards. His awards were for outstanding editorials, feature stories, and news stories about bowling. His winning awards in all three categories make him the winner of the “Triple Crown” of writing!
